Acorn Lodge Disability Assistance Features

At Acorn Lodge, we are proud of the welcome and facilities that we can offer our less able guests.  Many holiday properties have been adapted to cater for disabled guests – Acorn Lodge has these features designed and built in from the beginning.

The Lodge is sited on a steeply sloping private driveway with ample parking space right alongside it.  Once parked, a completely level, broad, decked pathway and balcony runs from the parking area into the Lodge entrance.  The entrance is also level, with no step, and with perfectly level wooden floors throughout – ideal for users of wheelchairs or walking aids.

The slope of the driveway means that the farthest end of the balcony (which forms an “L” shape round the end of the Lodge) is raised about 8 feet above ground level.  Given that the land falls away on both sides of the balcony, anyone sitting there has extensive views across the surrounding countryside from the Malvern Hills in the southeast, across the Teme Valley to the south,  and southwest some forty miles to the Black Mountains and down the Lugg Valley.  (The balcony is railed to chest height, and so provides a perfectly safe enclosed area.)  Views to the southwest are also obtainable from inside the Lodge, through the full glass panelled door leading to the decked area.  A bird feeding station has been placed outside the main lounge window so that our bird visitors can be watched in comfort from inside the property.

In the lounge area, two electric riser/recliner chairs are provided as standard.  There is ample room in the through lounge/kitchen way to enable an empty wheelchair to be left unfolded without impeding movement around the property.  All internal and external doors have been designed with extra width to enable a wheelchair to pass through them easily.

Sockets and light switches have been fitted at wheelchair-accessible height though out.  Touch-sensitive bedside lamps are used in the master bedroom.

The main bathroom leading directly off the master bedroom takes the form of a Wet Room with appropriate non-slip flooring.  The washbasin is of cantilever type, enabling a wheelchair to run beneath it.  There is an electric shower, and a shower chair is part of our standard bathroom equipment.  A grab rail is fixed alongside the WC, which has a slow-close lid.

On external doors, contrasting black handles are fitted to the white door material, to assist those with a visual impairment.

All the above fixtures and fittings come as standard with the accommodation.  For the convenience of guests, and to save them from carrying more equipment than necessary, we can also provide by request at the time of booking:

  • Toilet Frame
  • Folding Wheelchair
  • Walking Frame
  • Elbow Crutches
  • Walking Sticks

WE DO NOT MAKE AN EXTRA CHARGE for the use of these mobility aids.

Please note that although the Lodge is extremely disability-friendly, it is not specific disabled accommodation, and the sinks, worktops etc. are all at standard height.  There is no hoist in the bedroom or bathroom, and so we would advise potential guests whose mobility is very severely impaired to bring a companion or carer with them.
