Spring has been warmer and drier than it was last year, on the whole, and the hawthorn, or May-trees, have been very heavy in blossom. The bluebells, too, have been a splendid show, as guests have discovered when they used our guide to places of interest to visit local bluebell woods. Old country people would never have hawthorn blossom in the house – it was one of the blooms deemed to be “fairy flowers” and to cut and bring it inside the house brought bad luck. The same applied to primroses in some parts of the country, and indeed to a number of other spring flowers.
