SHAKESPEARE

Shakespeare

2016 is the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare, perhaps the greatest English poet and playwright of all time.  Many events are being staged around the country to celebrate his life and works, but here are some genuine Shropshire connections to the man (apart from his namesakes here in Hope Bagot!).  While staying in Acorn Lodge, you might want to make the trip to the village of Tong, near Shifnal, where two of the only three surviving Shakespeare epitaphs appear on the tomb of his friends, the Stanley family.  On the way back to Ludlow, you could call for refreshment at the 200+ year old Shakespeare Inn, in the heart of the famous Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage site.  Time your visit right, and you could see “Shakespeare’s Will” performed in the Severn Valley Country Park by the Rain or Shine Theatre Company on 2nd April – an interesting take on the life of the man and his family – or maybe attend a performance of Hamlet in Ludlow Brewery (yes, really!). This will be performed 9th-17th June by the Rooftop Theatre Company, who aim to bring Shakespeare’s plays to life and make them moving, lively and fun.

Or why not come and meet his name sake here at Thomas House HopeBagot Ludlow and stay at Acorn Lodge?
