Holiday on a Working Farm
Acorn Lodge is set on a 7 acre working smallholding which is in the Natural England Higher level Stewardship scheme which protects the natural wild flowers and wild life, where we keep cattle, sheep, and free-range hens. If you wish, you can help us collect what one guest described as “the best eggs we ever tasted” straight from the nestboxes. Our large kitchen garden supplies us with fresh fruit and vegetables for much of the year, and we are happy to share the surpluses with our guests. Real food, really fresh, and in season – what could be nicer?
You can watch wildlife on the smallholding itself. As you unwind after a day or two, you will be amazed at what you will see. May and June are the best times for birdsong, but there is a wonderful variety of plant and animal life throughout the year in the hedgerows, woodlands and pond.
In our introduction, we promised peace and tranquillity, and we meant it. Although we are just 4 miles from the charming little market town of Tenbury Wells (Queen Victoria’s “lovely Town in the Orchard”) and 6 miles from gourmet capital Ludlow, traffic noise will never reach you here. After dark, you hear only the sounds of whispering leaves and perhaps the sleepy bleat of a sheep, while overhead, bright constellations of stars sweep to the horizon, undimmed by artificial lights.
We are surrounded by farmland, much of this being smaller traditional family farms run in a way that has maximum wildlife and conservation benefits. You will see an abundance of wildlife with an amazing variety of native wild flowers and ancient hedgerows depending on the season.
